Understanding the Inner Workings – 30 tips for Staying Inspired

Intro

As we step into this new year with our resolutions and goals, I want to talk about mastering your craft and understanding the inner workings at play. For me, mastering any skill or art form involves diving deep into its fundamentals, mechanics, and inner workings. It’s also crucial to commit to staying consistent while practicing to reach that goal.

Commitment

Without a grasp of the bigger picture and the mechanisms at play, it’s easy to face setbacks in your workflow. For example, consider the process of learning a musical instrument. It’s not enough to just go through the motions or read notes from a page. It’s incredibly helpful to understand what those notes mean on a theoretical, practical, and technical level.

Mechanics

When you comprehend the mechanics behind what’s communicated through the notes, you’re more likely to learn effectively and reach greatness faster. These principles apply to any field, whether it’s cooking, sports, art, or science. True mastery requires a specific dedication to understanding the mechanics and practicing them consistently over a long period of time. It’s through this consistency that you gain control, confidence, and excel in your chosen field—in this case, guitar playing.

Overcoming Challenges

As you progress, there will be setbacks and challenges—things you just don’t intuitively understand. When you hit a plateau, it’s important to think critically and ask, “How can I resolve this right now? What can I do to improve?” Resolving these issues often opens up new paradigms that allow you to excel and reach the next level.

Tips

With that in mind, here are some tips for staying inspired and engaged as a guitarist and musician:

  1. Stay Open to New Musical Ideas and ApproachesI remember growing up as a rock guy, then moving to prog, fusion, bebop, and back to fusion and prog. I hung out with people who played blues and others who were really into jazz. Always be open to where your taste and excitement lead you. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles, scales, chord progressions, and arrangements. Sometimes the best ideas come from trying something new.Practice RegularlyPractice is essential to keep your skills sharp and continually improve. Talent is just a jumping point, but without regular practice, your skills will suffer. Set aside specific time each day for practice—whether it’s a dedicated session or shorter sessions throughout the day. Have a clear plan for what you’re going to work on. Personally, I focus on one or two things at a time, like a transcription or composition. Mastering a few things allows me to draw inspiration from them rather than being overwhelmed by too many subjects.Collaborate with Other MusiciansCollaborating is a great way to learn, grow, and bring different perspectives into your music. When you work with others, you exchange ideas and hold each other accountable. Whether it’s writing music together or just jamming, collaboration can result in more diverse and interesting outcomes. It helps you understand what you bring to the table and what you might leave for others. Always serve the music and be open to new approaches.Set Up Your Instrument and Space ProperlyTaking care of your instrument and setup can make a big difference in your playing. For example, making sure your guitar’s intonation and action are perfect makes it easier to express what you want to play. Also, having a dedicated setup where everything is ready to go can remove barriers to practicing or creating content. I used to struggle with setting up my recording gear every time I wanted to make a video, but now I have a dedicated room where everything is set up and ready to go.

  2. Conclusion

As you embark on this journey, remember there will be setbacks and challenges. What will define your success is your understanding of the different mechanisms at play and your ability to overcome obstacles one by one. When you encounter a challenge, stay with it, and by breaking through, you’ll open up new opportunities and ideas that will take you to the next level this year.

Understanding The Inner Workings

For me, mastering any skill or subject requires a thorough understanding of the inner workings and a commitment to consistent practice. Without a deep understanding of the mechanisms at play, it is impossible to fully control and excel at a task.

For example, consider the process of learning a musical instrument. It is not enough simply to go through the motions of playing the notes on a page. To truly excel as a musician, one must understand the underlying theory and techniques that shape the sound and expression of the music. This includes things like tone production, phrasing, and dynamics, as well as a grasp of the various scales, modes, and chord progressions used in different styles of music, and of course creativity and inspiration that come from the drive within.

The same principle holds true for any field or discipline. Whether it be sports, art, science, or any other pursuit, true mastery requires a dedication to learning and understanding the underlying principles and mechanisms, what I like to call: the inner workings. Only through this understanding and practice can one gain the control and confidence needed to excel in their chosen field.

Of course, this is not to say that the journey towards mastery is easy or without challenges. It takes time, effort, and perseverance to develop a deep understanding and build the skills needed to succeed. But the rewards of such a journey are immeasurable, as one gains not only the ability to control their craft, but also the confidence and satisfaction that comes from knowing they have achieved a level of excellence.

So, if you want to truly excel at anything, remember the importance of understanding and practice. With dedication and discipline, you can unlock the full potential of your abilities and gain the control you desire.
